Blog Tour: The Puppet Spell Top Ten

Tour Schedule

It’s always hard for me to pick favourites, especially when it comes to books – I own over 600 and I’ve read a lot more! Here are the first ten that come to mind:

1. The Harry Potter books – might be obvious, but I grew up with these books and I never get tired of rereading them. I’m even writing on them in my dissertation at university!

2. The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien – classic fantasy, never gets old!

3. Howl’s Moving Castle – or pretty much any book by Diana Wynne Jones! She writes brilliantly original (and often hilarious) fantasy novels, and not enough people have heard of her!

4. Sabriel by Garth Nix – one of the best modern fantasy writers for children out there.

5. Skulduggery Pleasant – these books are pure fun. They’re funny, scary, and relentlessly page-turning. The characters also all have awesome names!

6. The Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson – a must for any fans of epic fantasy.

7. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

 8. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

9. The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

10. A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin – a recent discovery, but it’s definitely one of the most gripping and original fantasy series I’ve read.

MORE ABOUT THE BOOK

The Puppet Spell

Unlike her rebellious sister Lucinda, fifteen-year-old Lexa prefers to spend her free time playing video games, fighting the forces of evil with her partner-in-crime Marlon. But when Lucinda steals an invisibility potion from their uncle’s storeroom, she unleashes chaos into their lives. Lexa and Marlon find themselves catapulted into a world far more dangerous than any video game, full of misleading illusions, sinister Conjurors and deadly Fey, and threatened by a man with a grudge known as the Puppeteer. Accompanied only by Lexa’s uncle’s unreliable (and rather dangerous) Chimera, Lexa and Marlon must navigate this world to find Lucinda- before they too fall under the spell of the puppet master...

'OMG, my hat goes off to Miss Adams. "The Puppet Spell", is a mind-bogglingly crafted novel...I love the intricate web that is interwoven throughout the story. It leaves you wondering what's real and what has been created from the mind of Adams. It's Harry Potter meets The Matrix. It's a fast-paced story that left me gripping the end of my seat waiting for the next scene to start. Adams's debut novel is a must have! Its original take on magic and other worlds will have you placed under a spell of its own.' - YA author Elle A. Rose (Amazon review)

Emma is a 21-year-old author from Birmingham, UK. When she isn't reading voraciously, studying, or taking every opportunity to travel, she can be found in front of her writing desk.

Having aspired to be a writer since the age of ten, Emma aims to give life to her (admittedly bizarre) daydreams, through creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel THE PUPPET SPELL, published in January 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of traditional fantasy, mythology, and video games.

When not living the crazy life of an English Literature with Creative Writing student at Lancaster University, Emma reluctantly resides in the attic in her parents' house in Birmingham. Local rumour is that she is working on a dark fantasy series for mature young adults featuring demons and other assorted night terrors.

Excerpt

Blu Tara stared her sister in the face. ‘Let me tell you what you don't know about love, Gamma. It is a curse. You will scoop out your core and abandon it just to have the Being that you love. You will steal another person's life force if it makes it easier to get it. You will abandon the world you have been cradled in, betray everything and everyone you care for. You’ll give up your name for it.’

Blu Tara's voice went soft and dreamy. ‘You will gladly close your eyes and embrace the world of darkness. You will kill or die for it. And you will hate yourself for the weakness that it brings on you. So don’t talk to me about love.’

Gamma shook her head. ‘You're not making sense,’ Blu Tara. ‘You talk as if... I’m the one who should be upset about all this.’

Blu Tara lifted her hand dismissively. She pointed a hot finger at Gamma. ‘Anyway don’t forget what we are.’

'And what are we?’ Gamma glared at her..

'Different. Strange. Something to be frightened of. Two Beings that can fuse and burn everything to ashes. That's the way they all see us down there. That's what the Stardog wants from you - the powers you possess.

‘I hate them all. With their suspicious, shiny faces and their empty games. I hate that Voice which drones on and on at us in the Learning Dome as soon as we've finished resting.

Innoverans! All those perfect, pretty Beings; they remember nothing — it’s the curse of this shallow, shining world. Tell me, Gamma - what do you remember of the world we come from before your Odors Apeno dumped us here?’

Gamma swung around to face her sister fully. ‘Blu Tara! What's got into you? Where’s all that coming from? I've never heard you speak like that before. This is about Krave and I- not you!’

Krave and you - don't make me laugh. And, oh! Here’s a big difference — between you and I this time, Twin Sister. It’s the answer to your question that you brought me up here to ask.’ Blu Tara mimicked Gamma's soft and musical voice, Why do you want to kill Krave?

Here's the answer, Gamma. I will do whatever I have to do to save myself. I'm the half of you that's not like you. I don't have a weeping heart. Now I'm out of here. I need my Rest.

“My top pick of 2012 YA… This book is just. plain. fun.”
~Jordan McCollum, author of Saints & Spies and I, Spy

“Sariah Wilson's new book, The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back, is hilarious…What follows is a story of fun and romance with some good non-preachy life lessons thrown in.  The voice in the main character, Mattie, makes the whole thing.  I thought it was definitely a book I'd recommend to anyone with teenagers or who just want to read a good teen romance.”
~Julie Coulter Bellon, author of All Fall Down and All’s Fair

“Sariah [Wilson] has written one of the funniest stories I've read in such a long, long time. I literally couldn't put it down. Yes, my poor Kindle's battery died and I was attached to a short power cord, contorted in a very uncomfortable position while I read to the end…. Sariah Wilson captured the back-biting, insecure, hormone-driven, clique-riddled high school atmosphere so perfectly you'd think she never grew up. I dare you not to laugh as you read this witty and oh, so, romantic story.”
~Debra Erfert of Windows into Writing

“Sariah Wilson writes like the best of/most popular YA teen fiction/teen romance authors - Sarah Dessen, Jennifer Echols, Susanne Collins, Cassandra Clare.  She sucks you in and never lets you go.  I finished the ~194 novel in one night because I just couldn't go to sleep without knowing the ending!  I hope that Sariah comes out with more novels, I know I'll be re-reading this one all the time!  She's extremely talented and needs to be talked about.  I highly recommend The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back! to anyone (over the age of 12) who wants a YA novel that's a real modern-day fairy tale.”
~Hilary at Novel d’Tales

“This was such an entertaining story! I shouldn't have started reading it so late in the evening, because I didn't want to put it down to go to sleep…This is a book I can see myself reading several times. It's a fast, clean read with great characters, and I highly recommend it.”
~Andrea of Literary Time Out

The book is wonderful.  It’s quirky and fun.  The story makes you laugh and you fall in love with the characters right from the beginning…This is a well-written book.  It is one that will make you smile and sigh as you remember your first love.  And it has a moral…be yourself, believe in yourself and maybe, just maybe, your fairytale will come true.  Pick up this book.”

Showstoppers/Three Sisters Blog Tour: Top Tens

Tour Schedule

Thanks for inviting me to talk about my ten favorite movies. I found it difficult to choose just ten. Here are the ones that came to mind today. Most of them are cheerful comedies. Perfect for a cold, wintry February!
Top Ten Favorite Movies

1.      Singing in the Rain
A joyful musical about the switch from silent movies to talkies, starring Gene Kelly, Deborah Reynolds and Donald O’Connor. I love Donald O’Connor walking up a wall as part of a dance routine.

2.      Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
This innovative mix of live action and cartoons is a fun take on film noir that can be enjoyed by adults as well as children. Roger’s an annoying but loveable character.

3.      The Incredibles
A feature-length cartoon about a family of superheroes who are called out of retirement to help save the world. It’s a charming story with lots of wisecracks.

4.      Brazil
An extraordinarily imaginative dystopian film by Terry Gilliam. The hero is an ordinary man in a miserable job who finds himself the enemy of the state. It’s a bleakly comic satire.

5.      Strictly Ballroom
Baz Luhrmann tells the story of a young couple—a successful dancer and a newcomer—who upset the world of ballroom dancing in Australia when they try to win a competition, only to find that history is repeating itself. A really lovely romantic comedy.

6.      Muriel’s Wedding
The story of the friendship between two young women in Australia, this is an uplifting comedy about small-town dreams and friendship.

7.      Sweet Charity
Shirley MacLaine stars in this musical about a girl who dreams of meeting a decent man and settling down. There are some great dance numbers and I love the character of Charity, a warm-hearted girl who never does anything quite right.

8.      Kung Fu Hustle
This is a gloriously funny live action film that plays out like a comic book. A gang is menacing a small town in China. Some elderly martial arts heroes come out of retirement to help the hero, an apparently ineffectual dreamer, to defeat the villains. A lot of fun. Watch the Cantonese version with subtitles rather than the dubbed version.

9.      Some Like it Hot
A comedy starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, this regularly screwball comedy tops the lists of favourite films in America and the UK. It’s charming and funny.

10.      Bringing Up Baby
Another screwball comedy, this time starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. An awkward paleontologist teams up with a clever socalite to recapture a pet leopard when it goes on the loose. Daft fun with loveable characters.

Lakisha's top ten favorite writing songs

Fast, slow, dance or rock - music helps my world go round and drives some of my intense scenes. These ten songs, no matter the storyline, always inspire me to write.

Kiss From A Rose (Seal) - I first heard this one from the Batman Forever soundtrack and was instantly smitten by the music video and Seal's voice. I tear up every time I hear this one, giving me an emotional boost to whatever scene I'm writing at the time.

Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman (Bryan Adams) - Thanks to the movie Don Juan DeMarco, I was introduced to this lovely ballad.

RESPECT (Aretha Franklin) - It's something everyone wants but people find so hard to give. And, since most of my characters are seeking this elusive item, I enjoy this song quite often.

Fight For Love (Elliott Yamin) - I'll say this about American Idol, it certain can turn out some good singers. Elliott may not have won, but his smooth vocals and sincerity win me over time. This song gets played a lot when my main character and significant other are going through some type of relationship bump.

Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely (Backstreet Boys) - This tearjerker stuck with me after the Backstreet Boys debuted it in the early 2000s. The visuals and starkness, as well as heartfelt singing, left an indelible mark on my soul with this song.

Save the Best for Last (Vanessa Williams) - One of the "aw" songs for me. The lyrics say it all for me.

You Raise Me Up (Josh Groban) - 'Nuff said.

I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues (Elton John) - We all have that moment when we're depressed because of a snag in our relationship, this song is a pick-me-up.

Grenade (Bruno Mars) & Private Emotion (Ricky Martin) - There's a toss-up for this place because these are both songs that touch places in my heart and spur some amazing scenes from me.

When Doves Cry (Prince) - Doves cry and so do I. This song always moves me.

You Are Not Alone (Michael Jackson) - Loneliness is one thing that we all fear. The motivational lyrics soothe and uplift at the same time.

Book Blast: Phantom

Phantom by Laura DeLuca

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.

Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.

Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

Excerpt

The orchestra tuned for its virtuoso, and Justyn stood ready. But no one else was ready for the magical performance he began. Beside her, Carmen was rambling on about something mundane. Rebecca elbowed her to silence so she could listen to the perfectly thrilling tenor. As she listened to the song unfold, the world around her started to slip away. Gone was the high school auditorium. Gone were the rowdy teenagers. The Gothic stranger on the stage had become the embodiment of Erik, and Rebecca watched him in all his dark glory, belting out his tormented love through the words of his song. And she was as breathless with wonder as Christine herself must have been when the masked stranger serenaded her in the candlelit labyrinth of the opera house. In that moment, Justyn wasn’t just portraying the phantom. Justyn was the phantom.

“Let the music touch your soul.
Let the darkness make you whole.
Do not fear what is unknown.
Your true path has now been shown.
Listen to the words I sing.
Embrace the peace that night will bring.”

As he continued to sing in his deep but somehow angelic voice, Rebecca found that she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. With every line, her heart began to beat faster.  She truly felt the arms of night wrapping her in a warm embrace. She could almost feel the hands of the phantom glide along her body as the words poured forth. The music caressed her. It possessed her—mind, body and soul. Each word left her longing, yearning for more.

She was gawking so obviously, it was hardly surprising when Justyn felt her eyes on him and steadily met her gaze. She realized her mouth was hanging open in stunned awe, and she quickly snapped it shut. His lips moved into just a small hint of a smile. He never took his eyes off her while he sang the final verse, making her cheeks flush to the point that she felt almost feverish. But it wasn’t embarrassment but excitement, arousal even, which was sending her mind spinning in so many directions.

When the song was over, and Rebecca had recovered just a hint of her composure, she couldn’t help but burst into a healthy round of applause. A few scattered people joined in, including Debbie and Carmen after she nudged them in the ribs. But only Miss King seemed to truly appreciate the brilliance of his talent as much as Rebecca did.

“That was amazing, Justyn!” the teacher gushed.

“Lord Justyn,” he corrected as he stepped down from the stage.

A few others complimented him as well, but he took in all in stride. In fact, his serious expression never faltered as he stepped down from the stage. He seemed almost bored, like it was all he could do to hold back a yawn, despite the smiles and words of encouragement.

But not everyone in the crowd was pleased as Justyn glided down the aisle, so ethereal in his dark garments that he still resonated the spirit of the Opera Ghost. Miss King might have been excited about the newest male addition to her cast after being limited for many years, but Tom and his group of boisterous companions glared at him as he passed them by.  Jay sneered and tossed a balled up piece of paper in Justyn’s direction, but the Goth was quick, and caught it in his hand without missing a beat.

“I think you dropped something,” he said.

His speaking voice was no less melodic than his singing voice, but something about his tone made Rebecca shiver. He tossed the paper back at Jay, who was nowhere near as coordinated as Justyn. He practically fell off his seat in his efforts to catch it.

“Hey vampire,” Tom called when Justyn went to walk away. “Are you sure you can handle the competition?”

Justyn smiled, a cool, sarcastic half-smile, and crossed his arms over his chest. “Are you?”

Miss King didn’t notice the short confrontation, and Justyn vanished from the auditorium as quickly and mysteriously as he had appeared. Only Rebecca had noticed the very real tension between the two boys. She wondered if it was a bad omen for them to start off the production with hard feelings and envy. That could only lead to trouble. The kind of trouble that could end with someone getting hurt.  The kind of trouble that Rebecca would do whatever it took to avoid.
