Music is a universal language. Or at least that’s what I’ve heard. And I tend to believe it because I can listen to a music composition in another language and fall in love with and even comprehend some of it. Music can be without words and still speak to us.
Music is a drive for many aspects of
art. If I decide to paint, I can listen to music while painting.
Same goes for drawing or art or cooking or any activity. I love to
listen to music while writing. You can listen to music while doing
almost anything, and it’s the only true art form you can appreciate
while doing something else.
Unless you’re in a company meeting.
You probably shouldn’t listen to music while in a company meeting,
unless it’s in the music industry.
Some authors speak of having playlists
for the books they write. I can’t say I have a playlist, but a
play “station”. I listen to Pandora while I write and find a
certain radio station that fuels that particular work. I might have
a few specific songs, but mostly the artists I choose change with
each book I write. I have my favorite all time songs, of course, and
all time artists, but my lists to fuel and inspire my
work-in-progress changes with each WIP.
For instance, I am working on the third
(and probably final) installment of my current Slopeside
series. Burn on the Western Slope, the first in the series,
is published and I will be querying my second, tentatively titled
Fatal Snag, very soon. I’m now almost finished with the
third, tentatively titled Final Mend. Each book had its own
play “station” list.
All books were very much inspired by
the emotional aspects of music. In Fatal Snag, a fashion
consultant is happy to use her obsessive-compulsive planning to
assist with her cousin's wedding but hits her first snag when she
encounters the groom's sexy brother. In Final Mend, a
recovering alcoholic-turned triathlete hires a former
investigator-turned bartender to help track a missing child. Both
require a lot of emotion. Music, in my opinion, is the best way of
drawing out emotion. I use music to fuel my emotion, in hopes I will
compose emotions from my stories in my readers.

Meet the Author
In high school, I was dubbed most likely to write a novel because I always had my nose stuck in a book. I’ll never forget the day the history teacher told me to finish my page and put down the novel romance I had hidden behind the history book that he was lecturing us on. I thought it was cool of him to let me finish my page, LOL! Of course, I closed the paperback right then. I was way too nervous to finish reading with all eyes on me.
Most people didn’t know back then how much I wanted to write, and now it’s no secret. I’ve always loved reading about the adventure of love, and getting involved in the legal field developed my love of suspense. I believe the whole act of love is a mystery that most people have trouble resolving, so now I work on resolving the mystery of love for my characters. It might be the only thing in life I can solve!
I work full time as a certified paralegal and spend my nights writing my next scenes.
