Muse Unexpected Blog Tour

Muse tour

Muse Unexpected
Muse Unexpected "We're Muses. Not vampires, not fairies, not werewolves. We're Muses." Sophie was sure her mother had reached an epic level of crazy. ‘We're Muses?' She thought Muses were lame, not to mention she found the idea ridiculous. However, Sophie couldn't explain away her physical transformation that made Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries look like a bad Walmart make-over, not to mention why her mood swings triggered an uncontrollable ability to shoot powerful bursts of energy out of her hands. Sophie soon realizes modern day Muses have evolved into powerful guardians of humankind, tasked with keeping mortals on the right path and the original Olympians locked away from the world. But old hatreds don't die easily, especially for immortal enemies that have an eternity to plot and gather their forces. Well aware of the Fates' foretelling of another Olympian war, and a young Muse that would rise up as a warrior and defeat them, the Olympians have vowed to either possess Sophie or destroy her. Either way, they will make sure everyone associated with their imprisonment will reap an eternal damnation in the Underworld, leaving the Olympians to restore Mount Olympus and force humankind into a future of never-ending servitude and misery.

Praise for Muse Unexpected

"Ripe with conflict, skin-crawling creepy that is sprinkled with a wonderful sense of humor and a plot fraught with horrific danger in every step taken by Sophie, this book should be on the top of everyone's must read list. Simply put, I loved it and can't wait for book 2 to come out." ~Olive (Amazon Review)

"I remember learning about mythology & Greek gods in elementary school....boring! Well, this fantastic book takes everything you thought about gods/mythology and turns it on it's ear, sort of like "Wicked" did to the "Wizard of OZ". At times funny at times gruesome and scary, this story definitely kept my interest. I loved the way the writer made the gods "human". I also liked the subtle, blink and you'll miss them hints sprinkled throughout the story. Don't let the young adult genre scare you away. This is an engaging story that can be enjoyed by all. Can't wait for the next one!!!!" ~Paula (Amazon Review)

I was born and raised in New Jersey, and am the proud son of Puerto Rican parents. My parents moved to New Jersey from Puerto Rico shortly after getting married, I was born about a year later. I have 2 younger siblings, twins, Eric and Erica. Growing up I was a kind child who never asked for much. I didn't ask for anything because my imagination provided me with everything that I would ever need. My mother always said that of all her children I was the one that gave her the least amount of trouble.

I was considered a dreamer by all of my teachers, but I never thought that label was a bad thing. I was initially very shy until I got older and stopped caring what others opinions of me. I realized that I was who I was, and you either liked me or you didn't, simple as that. I have been called weird, quirky, funny and trustworthy, all titles I hold dear.

I wrote the short story of the Foundlings when I was still in High School and it was not till much later that I fully developed it into a book. Back in the day, I used to also write poetry, but story telling became my true love.

After High School, I moved to Florida and went to college. I dabbled in varied professions over the next several years. I worked in jobs such as Hotel Manager, Accountant, Insurance Agent, Travel Agent, Customer Service Rep, Draftsman, and even a Fry Cook. When I started on the book, I realized that this was my passion, what I was ultimately meant to do.

I loved writing the Foundlings and even if it does not become a best seller, I will continue to write. Publishing my first book led to me meeting my wonderful wife. So God willing and with help of my fans, The Foundlings will make a mark in the literary world. Thank you for reading about me.

Indie Hoopla Promos: Too Much Ado by Tony Angelo

Winner: Goodreads Best Poetry Publications 2011

Praise for "Too Much Ado":
Generally, I am not a big fan of poetry, but Too Much Ado is Tony Angelo at his best. Lyrical, deep, moving. It's not what he says--a lot of poets talk about poverty, race, desperation, humanity, relationships--it's how he says it. He says so much with such a few words. Speaks the harshest of themes in the softest of tones...."--Tammy Ruggles, Amazon.com

About the Book

Too much ‘Ado’ is a poetry book that tackles some of the major prejudices within the world; this includes race, homosexuality, and children with disabilities. In addition the poem speaks to the heart, reminding us that relationships can be very difficult. For example:

DISGRUNTLED
“I came away from someone that I thought I knew. And if her eyes were any measure then my life would be through.
I’d felt so out of place and I didn’t know why.
It seemed she didn’t recognize me or was I being just too shy?”

A FATHER’S EYES
“I remember standing at the door, peeking out the window, never seeing either of my parents depending on how their career goes.
Those promises that were never kept at a time that would soon be gone.
You sit inside your room and wonder how long must it go on!
Holding one truth within your heart I will never do this to my son…”

Each piece is a simple reminder that while life can be difficult and even debilitating it is better shared together with love and understanding.

Masquerade Tours: Cover Reveal: Andromeda's Fall by Abigail Owen

Andromeda's Fall
by Abigail Owen

Designed by: Regina Wamba from Mae I Design
Publication Date: February 25, 2014
Series: Shadowcat Nation, Book One
Genre: Adult Paranormal Romance (18+)

Andie Reynolds is being hunted. After witnessing her mother's violent death at the hands of a pack of wolf shifters, Andie has devoted her life to protecting her community of cougar shifters from a similar fate. But now, a greater threat lies within her own dare, and she must run. If she stays, Kyle Carstairs will try to force their Mating, seeking the added power their union would provide.

Andie would rather chew off her own foot than end up with Kyle. Though, knowing him, she won't live long either way. Andie's only hope of survival is to Mate the Alpha of the Keller Dare with which she is seeking asylum. But before she can get to him, Andie must first go through A.J., one of the Alpha's Protectors. The incredibly frustrating shifter insists on challenging her story, her skills, her trust… and her heart.

Andie is running out of options and out of time. But risking the life of someone she loves - just to save herself - goes against every instinct she has.

EXCERPT

Andie crouched low, obscured from view in the underbrush, and watched the compound with a quiet patience born of experience. If her calculations were correct, the next patrol of guards would pass by within the minute. Her posture and expression didn’t shift an inch when, moments later, she was proven correct. As soon as the patrol passed out of sight, Andie moved, swift and silent as a shadow. She sprinted across the well-cut lawn, ignoring the pain radiating throughout her body, and was up and over the wall, using her momentum and the corners formed by a turn in the wall surrounding the installation. She dropped to the ground on the other side with a barely audible thud.

Andie found herself on the back side of a well-manicured garden. She stayed completely still, crouched low to the ground once more, and took her time observing her location. Ahead, about the length of a football field, she could see light from the main building in the complex. The glow spilled from a pair of glass doors and across the trees and plants, creating patches of dark and light.

A plan in mind, Andie moved again, using the pools of darkness and groupings of plants for cover. She didn’t go for the doors. They were too obvious and were likely wired for the alarm system and required some kind of code to get in and out. But on the second floor, one of the windows was wide open, allowing the cool nighttime breeze in. With agile grace, Andie swung herself up into the branches of a large tree. She took care to only use her right arm, which slowed her down a bit. As quickly as she could without rustling the leaves, she made her way up to the branch closest to that open window. And she stopped again. And observed.

Andie didn’t move for close to thirty minutes as she watched. And then, without any warning, she leapt, putting all the power of her feline form into the action. She didn’t shift exactly - she was trying to avoid that right now since it would be seen as a direct threat - but she used the might of the beast inside her to clear the distance to the window. She sailed through the opening and immediately tucked and rolled as she hit the ground. She found her feet and returned to her crouch.

Using her cat’s hearing, she waited. Someone might have heard the sound of her landing. Her injured left arm was messing with her usual finesse. At the same time as she listened, she also turned in a slow circle, checking that room she was in was empty. Many minutes later, satisfied that she was alone and that no one was coming for her… yet… Andie moved to the door of the room she currently occupied. Cracking it open a hair, she looked down the hallway.

She tensed to open the door all the way and then froze in place when a deep, male voice sounded from directly behind her, “Stop where you are.”

Dammit, Andie thought. How the hell did he find me?

Blog Tour: Mooncalf

 mooncalf tour

I would like to welcome Linda L Zern to the Indie Author How-to couch. I've picked her brain on some burning topics and here are her answers.

Writing challenges faced when you wrote this book.

Although Mooncalf is a historical novella and I have included elements of fantasy in the symbolism of the orange grove and grafting, I often write straight up fantasy and dystopian books. I’m working on two right now, so I appreciate the challenges. Primarily I struggle to balance moving the story forward with the necessary world building that is essential to the genre. It’s easy to get so wrapped up in the descriptions and explanations, you forget the cardinal rule—making things happen when they’re supposed to happen. Beta readers and a great editor is essential in my opinion.

The story behind your novel. Just where did your idea come from?

After reading a rough draft of MOONCALF, my daughter handed it back to me and said, “But, Mom, I liked the characters so much I just wanted them to go off to their fort and start a baby sitter’s club or something.”

“Oh, babe, it’s not that kind of story,” I said. “I wish it could have ended differently too.”

And I do. I really do.

But the world of 1966 provided no place where the friendship of these two little girls could survive and thrive and to pretend otherwise would be patently dishonest. America was a country in upheaval. Adults were struggling with changing attitudes, roles, and cultural parameters. Is it any wonder that Olympia and Leah’s friendship is lost in the turmoil? There were no babysitter’s clubs for a white girl and an African American girl to start.

I often ask readers, “Is it too sad?” And am often surprised and pleased when they reference the relationship between Olympia and Leah. They focus on the love that the two girls have for each other. Maybe, you have to be a child to see past the tragedy to recognize that the in the end our protaganists reject the ‘false traditions of their elders’ and choose love.

My daughter also commented, “This seems like ancient history to me. I can’t imagine people thinking or acting like this, but it’s not ancient history. Is it? It’s your history.”

It’s my history and the history of our mothers and grandmothers. It’s America’s history. May we never forget it. May we never repeat it. May we always choose love.

Some of the challenges of creating the setting and/or world building for your novel.

Historical novels aren’t as different as you might think from fantasy. Instead of created a world, a writer has to re-create a world without sounding absolutely silly. History has its own rules and world building. MOONCALF is set in 1966 in rural Florida, during a tumultuous time. Try using the word groovy in a sentence and tell me if if doesn’t sound like a weird fantasy language. Any world building is about effortless reality. Believe me, it’s not effortless.

Why did you choose to write in this genre?

I love all the genres. I love reading. It’s fun to think about trying to write something in every genre. For now . . . It’s historical and fantasy.

A writing skill that you do well.

Creating characters that live and breath and have a being, for me, is the most interesting part of the process. Isn’t it the characters that readers remember?  The people who we get to become for a time. When you ask a child, “What’s the book about?” They will say that it’s about a boy or a girl or witch or a dragon or a bear or . . . Characters are the heart of the story. And that’s why writers must give their characters hearts to beat, bleed, and break.

Mooncalf cover
Mooncalf by Linda Zern

Over Olympia and Leah's heads, Americans race the Russians to the moon; on their television sets young men fight and struggle in the mud of Viet Nam; and America holds its breath between heartbreaking tragedies. But on Miss Brinker's school bus, in the seat with the rip in the green plastic, Olympia and Leah fall in love, the way children do: immediately, completely, and without knowing or caring why they shouldn't. Olympia Crooms, with her happy hair, and Leah Breck, with her silly red dog, are two smart girls. Olympia's father works other men's orange groves in rural Central Florida and tells his daughter that school is the best way to reach for the stars. Leah's father moves his family from the Space Coast to the country where she and her brother can climb orange trees, imagine lions in the tall grass, and learn to feed baby cows milk from a bottle. At Evegan Elementary, two smart girls find each other and have to decide if they will learn the hardest lessons of all: the false traditions of their fathers.

Praise for Mooncalf

"One of the most admirable things about Mooncalf is that it's difficult to find a single wasted word in the entire book. Granted the book is short; yet, it is very rare to find a book which treats with such delicacy the choosing of each word--each adjective, verb, and noun. Themes, motifs, and symbols are everywhere throughout Mooncalf, and most impressive of all none of it is discarded. Motifs and themes exist in big and small circles in Mooncalf, circling back in on themselves as well as intertwining themselves with the plot and the characters that inhabit it. And those motifs and themes, those messages and those symbols, don't go away once you've finished the book. They stick with you. It's hard to forget Mooncalf."" ~ The Thousander Club

"I never expected to be moved to tears by a book meant for adolescents. Buy it, read it, share it, and let yourself be changed by it." ~Lacey Smith

Blog Tour: The Enchantress of Lynniah

spotlight

Lynniah

Excerpt

Prologue:

The moonlight leaked sparingly through the rigid thickness of trees in front of Lillian, giving barely enough illumination and just enough time to jump over the large roots, rocks and other unrecognizable obstacles, as she ran with all her might to elude the enemies behind her.  She knew from the sharp snaps and crackling of leaves and twigs that they were gaining up on her fast.  Dreads are large, but not quick on their feet, and to her advantage none of them were on horseback.  The fortress couldn’t be too far ahead, she thought.  And she knew that if she reached it she might find cover enough to cast some effective spells.  The deep grunting of Dreads closed in behind her.  She held her hand up against the sky with a beckoning motion, causing large branches to crack violently; hoping to create a more solid barrier between her and her savage foes.  Glancing after, she could see that it had worked, if only for a moment.  She tried to gain speed, but her legs were becoming tight and sore from the constant, grueling chase.  Arrows continued whizzing violently through the sky all around her, as she reached the top of the small hill ahead – that’s where she could finally see it. Foreboding as it was, with its black, slick, and sinister design; it still looked very extraordinary in the moonlight.  She had reached the fortress at last.  It had taken years to discover how to disarm the protective enchantments around it, and now she was finally here.  Four members of the Great Council, her companions, had been killed tonight on this deadly quest and she simply couldn’t bear to fail them all now.  As she scanned the open clearing around the building, she noticed that more Dreads were standing guard and preparing for the oncoming chase that was imminently obvious by the arrows, yells, and loud trampling coming their way.  Lillian continued to rain debris in their path, frantically casting spells behind her as she ran.  Taking cover behind a large tree, she began enchanting the rocks to fly in the direction of her pursuers.  Loud grunts and angry howls echoed through the forest as the rocks made contact.  A few moments of near silence ensued, giving Lillian the confidence she needed to break away from the tree and descend the slope in front of the fortress.  She speedily moved down the slope, hiding between trees and large rocks on the way to conceal her.  It seemed as if her pursuers had finally fallen behind!  She triumphantly moved nearer to the entrance, when all of the sudden something hot and forceful struck her violently in the back.  The heat surged through her body rapidly, causing instant paralysis.  As she fell backward onto the hard earth, and just before her eyes closed, a long black haired figure hovered over her, piercing her with dark and soulless eyes.

Well, with all of that, along with evil Nymphs and blood thirsty Banelorgs - these are things you've only likely experienced if you've had a nice long visit to Lynniah. Lakisha Spletzer

Where to start? I suppose with the basics.

I'm an Indie Cross-Genre writer of science fiction/fantasy/paranormal romance/YA. I started writing stories and poetry at the age of 8 and haven't stopped yet. I think I've always been a writer, but becoming a published one took a lot of work and dedication.

That didn't happen until after I left my home state of Virginia, and moved to Florida in 2004.

I've learned to not let life's many road blocks and speed bumps throw me to the curb. I can't wait to dive in and continue to share the stories swirling around in my head.

Book Blast: Mooncalf

mooncalf tour
Tour Schedule

About the Book

Mooncalf coverMooncalf by Linda Zern Over Olympia and Leah's heads, Americans race the Russians to the moon; on their television sets young men fight and struggle in the mud of Viet Nam; and America holds its breath between heartbreaking tragedies.
Praise for Mooncalf "One of the most admirable things about Mooncalf is that it's difficult to find a single wasted word in the entire book.

Excerpt

Olympia’s voice was a whisper in Leah’s ear. “I don’t have those things, those cooties.”

“I know. I don’t even care what those things are.”

“Cootie bugs. Miss Rhodes is saying I have bugs crawling and living in my hair and at my house.”

“Miss Rhodes didn’t mean you.” Leah felt icky. “She couldn’t mean you.”

“It’s because I’m one of the poor kids, you know. She said it: sharecroppers.”

Without looking, Olympia pulled her hand out of Leah’s and started trying to flatten the wrinkles out of the crushed paper doily on the valentine. Leah put her hand over Olympia’s, the valentine a ruined mess under their fingers.

“But Miss Rhodes has hair just like yours.”

“No,” Olympia said, shaking her head. “No, Miss Rhodes doesn’t want hair like mine, like she had when she was a little girl. She wants white folk’s hair. That’s what Granny Mac says. ‘Cuz some colored folks like her don’t know who they want to be any more.’”

Leah looked at the neat part in her friend’s black braids, and loved the way Olympia’s barrettes danced when she dropped her head. She saw only the complicated, clever patterns in her friend’s clean black hair. Leah saw only Olympia.

LindaAuthor Linda Zern Linda Zern is a native of Florida where she learned to be moonstruck. She wrote her first children's chapter book, The Pocket Fairies of Middleburg, in 2005. Writer's Digest called "the perspective of these tiny beings [the pocket fairies] refreshing, enchanting, and intriguing." Florida Publisher's Association was kind enough to award her little book the President's Book Award for best children's book of 2005. Mrs. Zern has since published an inspirational book, The Long-Promised Song, serving as both writer and illustrator. Three collections of her humorous essays (ZippityZern’s Uncommon Nonsense) can be found at Smashwords.com, and her award winning essays have been recognized and published at HumorPress.com. Her current project, Mooncalf, is her first work of historical fiction for Middle School readers. Set in rural Central Florida, the author tells the story of two misfit girls and the hard lessons they must learn about friendship and love from their friends, their families, and their world. The mystical state of Florida remains an enchanted and delightsome place for both Mrs. Zern and her husband of thirty plus years, and so they continue to make their home among the palmettos and armadillos in the historic town of Saint Cloud.
