$100 Book Blast – King of Bad

King of Bad
Jeff Mean would rather set fires than follow rules or observe curfew. He wears his bad boy image like a favorite old hoodie; that is until he learns he has superpowers and is recruited by Super Villain Academy – where you learn to be good at being bad. In a school where one kid can evaporate all the water from your body and the girl you hang around with can perform psychic sex in your head, bad takes on a whole new meaning. Jeff wonders if he’s bad enough for SVA. He may never find out. Classmates vilify him when he develops good manners. Then he’s kidnapped by those closest to him and left to wonder who is good and who is bad. His rescue is the climactic episode that balances good and evil in the super world. The catalyst – the girl he’s crushing on. A girlfriend and balancing the Supers is good, right? Or is it…bad?

Blog Tour: Dragonwitch

dragonwitch tour

Excerpt

"You are early, my lord."
Alistair shrugged. The library boasted only three windows, mere slits in the stone, all west- and southward-facing, admitting none of the morning light. Thus the room was full of candles sitting in wooden, wax-filled bowls. Their glow cast Alistair's face into ghoulish shadows, emphasizing the dark circles beneath his eyes.
The Chronicler frowned, not unkindly but with measured concern as Alistair took a seat at the long table in the center of the room. "Another restless night?"
Alistair buried his face in his hands. Then he rubbed at the skin under his eyes, stretching his face into unnatural shapes, and ended by pulling at the roots of his hair. "You're an intelligent, learned man, are you not, Chronicler?"
"So some would say," the Chronicler acceded.
"Have you," Alistair continued, still pulling at his hair and studying the grain of the wooden table before him with unprecedented concentration, "in all your readings, picked up a word or two concerning dreams?"
The Chronicler set aside his quill and pumice stone, folding his arms as he turned on his stool to more fully look upon the young lord. "What manner of dreams?"
"Recurring," said Alistair, darkly. He stared at the table as though he should like to burn it with his gaze. The candlelight shone into the depths of his eyes, turning the pale blue irises to orange.
The Chronicler tipped his head to one side. "Are we speaking of a dream you have experienced, Lord Alistair?"
Alistair nodded.
"In this dream, did you see an ax, a sword, or any form of iron weaponry suspended above your head?"
"No."
"Did you see the face of one long dead calling out to you from behind a shadowy veil?"
"No."
"Did your last-night's supper confront you in an antagonistic manner?"
"What?" Alistair looked up.
"Did it?"
"Why would I dream something like that?"
The Chronicler leaned back on his stool, reaching to a near bookshelf from which he selected a volume. The vellum pages were neatly copied in a flowing, if shaky, script, and all was bound up beautifully in red-stained leather. The Chronicler flipped to a certain page illuminated with images more fantastic than accurate. He read:

"Ande it dide com aboot that Sir Balsius, moste Noble Earle of Gaheris, saw withyn the Eiye of hyse Mynde a sertayn Mutton upon which he hade Et the night prevyus. And thyse Mutton did taxe Hym moste cruelly for having Gnawed upone its Joints. And it spake unto Hym, thusly, sayinge: 'And surely Thou, most jowl-som Lorde, will die upon the Morrow, and the Wolfs will Gnaw upon Thyy Joints.' So it dide Transpyre that Sir Balsius betook Hymselfe to the Hunt, and--"

"Wait, wait!" said young Alistair, his brow puckering. "You're telling me that this Earl Balsius--"
"Your great-great-grandfather, if I recall the chronology correctly," said the Chronicler.
"--dreamt about an antagonistic mutton and died the next day?"
"According to my predecessor, Raguel, yes." The Chronicler shut the book and smiled at the young lord, a grim, mirthless sort of smile. "But I give little credence to these so-called histories. Neither should you. Dreams are merely dreams, and stories are merely stories. They are subjects of curious interest but nothing upon which to base your life or your future."
He shoved the volume back into its place with perhaps a little more vehemence than was called for. Alistair, however, did not notice. He was trying to recall what he'd eaten the night before.
"What about," he said, a little embarrassed but eager to know, "what about a pale-faced child?"
"Come again?" said the Chronicler.
"A pale-faced child. Paler than any child I ever saw. Like a ghost or a phantom. Running along the edge of a bottomless chasm, and . . . " Alistair stopped, his mouth suddenly dry, and stared into the flickering candle flame, unable to continue.
"Is this your recurring dream, my lord?"
"Perhaps. Some of it."
"Well, no doubt about it then," said the Chronicler. "You're going to die."
"What?" Alistair nearly knocked the candle over as he spun to face the Chronicler. "Do you mean it?"

"You saw the pale-faced child beside the bottomless chasm?" The Chronicler selected another volume, slid down from his stool, and approached Alistair at the table. "Then there can be no doubt about it. You're going to die. A slow, lingering death brought on by study and academic application." He plunked the book down in front of Alistair. "As long as you're here, you might as well start reading. Open to the tenth page, please."

Book Tour: Ixeos Rebellion

iXEOS R copy

EXCERPT:
Usually, Chicago was much like it used to be before the War: gangs and violence and mayhem in good supply around the tunnels where the portal came out. Whether by chance or because Landon was paving their way, this trip was completely uneventful. Michael, an outsider who spent much of his time in Chicago, had come with them since Vasco didn’t know how to get to the Worthington farm.
“This is weird,” Michael mumbled, as they walked through the subway tunnels in silence. They’d come armed with knives and baseball bats, but they met no one.
Vasco led them to the Depot, where they picked up three motorcycles and headed west to Westchester. Clay kept looking over his shoulder, but they didn’t see a single soul all the way to the Worthington farm. It was creepy, as if everyone in Chicago, humans and Firsts, had been teleported elsewhere.
Dr. Worthington’s farm was a small affair, an old white farmhouse at the end of a gravel road. The elderly doctor had allowed the trees to run wild in the front of the house and along the road, so that the property looked overgrown and deserted to anyone driving by on the small, two-lane country road. But behind the house, on rolling hills spreading out over five acres, he had cultivated a miracle. Half of the land was devoted to vegetables and herbs, some medicinal and some for cooking. One acre was a profusion of wildflowers, poppies in particular. Two contained fruit trees: apple, pear and plums. Along a creek at the bottom of the property were willows.
The doctor had heard the motorcycles coming down the drive and was standing at the door to greet them when they stopped, a shotgun hanging at rest by his side. Michael smiled and waved.
“Hey, Doc!” he said.
“Michael! Long time, no see.” The man was in his mid-seventies, but trim and fit. His blonde hair was half gray but still full; he wore it long, waving over his shirt collar. “What brings you to see me?”
Vasco walked quickly up the steps with his hand outstretched. After shaking, he introduced himself. “Dr. Worthington, I’m Vasco. Bobby Turner. I’m afraid we’re in a hurry — Angie sent us. One of our people has suffered a terrible head injury, and we need to get advice, and also medicine. Penicillin, I know, but anything else you think we need.”
Glancing at Clay and seeing the seriousness on all the faces, he waved them in. Closing the door, he motioned them into a back parlor, which had been turned into a veritable pharmacy. The doctor began putting pills into a small jar.
“This is the penicillin. Angie knows the dosage. Now quickly, tell me about the patient.”

As Darian and the outsiders from Earth travel the globe through the mysterious tunnels in Paris, they learn that the Firsts are preparing to launch another wave of biological warfare. With a transporter that will allow the aliens to target any city, anywhere on the planet, the rebels know they must stop them at all costs. As things get more dangerous on Ixeos, the outsiders find that they're pushed to their limit. Will they fight for freedom, no matter the price?

Ixeos
The McClellands are enjoying a lazy summer vacation at the beach when they are lured from our world into Ixeos, an alternate Earth. Finding themselves lost in a maze of tunnels under Paris and surrounded by strangers, they discover that they have been brought to Ixeos for one purpose: to take the planet back from humanoid aliens who have claimed it. With the aid of the tunnels and a mysterious man named Landon, the teens travel the world seeking the key that will allow them to free Darian, the long-imprisoned rebel leader. But the aliens aren't the only problem on Ixeos -- the McClellands have to deal with brutal gangs, desperate junkies, and a world without power, where all the technology is owned by the aliens, and where most of the population has been killed or enslaved. The worst part? There's no way home.

Excerpt

Luggage backs up, causing one bag to fall off the machine. Angry travelers glare at me, as if I've made it my mission in life to make them late. Only one person doesn't make me feel like a total jerk. He looks like a cowboy with his wide-brimmed brown leather hat, pointy boots and belt buckle. I suck in a breath when we make eye contact, his blue eyes two shades darker than mine. This is the kind of man writers dedicate romance novels to. Broad chested with ropes of muscles under his shirt, strength earned from real work not a gym, skin sun-kissed and glowing. He smiles at me and my knees go weak.

Le sigh.

Feeling the heat rush to my face, I nod my head in my most regal fashion and turn away as the scrawny 20-something guy working behind the x-ray machine asks me to follow him so he can inspect my bag.

He steps to the side and opens my red carry-on, shuffling through my iPad, a change of clothes and other staples I was told to always carry with me in case my luggage was ever lost. There are perks to being one of the youngest in a family of world travelers.

My jaw drops when he pulls out a gallon sized plastic baggie and dumps the contents—items I've never seen before in my life—onto the counter. Holding up a pair of red G-String panties with a matching bra, if that slip of silk can be called a bra, and a handful of—oh my God—condoms?

He smirks at me and reads aloud the note that's in the baggie. "Winter, Have some fun this summer. Here's a starter sex kit to help you out. All my love, your favorite cousin, Daring."

I want to die.

I want the floor to open up and swallow me, or lightning to strike me dead.
I want them to arrest me, just so I can get away from the dozens of eyes taking in my humiliation.

I fight the urge to tell them I have a bomb, or maybe that I am the bomb. Or to tell them I'm a drug mule. Anything to divert attention from the most embarrassing moment of my entire life.

And then I remember the hot cowboy.

Who's standing behind me.

Who heard and saw everything.

My cheeks, I can already feel, are a flaming red. I probably look like my head is about to explode. I wish it would, so I won't have to live in this moment any longer.

An older woman, probably the supervisor, grabs the note and the panties from the jerk staring at me. "I think you've sufficiently searched this bag." She nods sympathetically at me and shoves Daring's gift back under my clothes, zipping my suitcase shut. "Sorry for the inconvenience, ma'am. You can take your belongings and head to your gate now."

heather mAuthor Heather Manley, N.D. I have always been passionate about healthy foods and exercising. Growing up in Toronto, Canada I would exhaust my allowance at the health food store and write school papers on spices and herbs. It was no wonder I found myself studying biology at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. I loved animals as well so I initially focused on wildlife conservation and animal biology, however, with some exposure to naturopathic medicine, this health care philosophy rang true for me. I switched to pre-med and I graduated in 1993. I earned my doctorate at the from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon before moving with my family to Hawaii where I became licensed and continue to practice today. Everything I learned in medschool came into fruition when my children were born. I realized the importance of teaching them, by example, about healthy food and lifestyle. Telling them what to eat was not enough, so I created and wrote educational adventure stories that explain the physiological systems in the body. Not only did my kids love the engaging and interactive stories but so did their friends. I love seeing kids have fun learning to understand their bodies and how food helps them run faster and be smarter. My focus is on preventative health. I am passionate about encouraging families to seek the value of a simple lifestyle and offering tools to assist them at being proactive and confident in their daily living. I am constantly inspired seeing people make positive changes in their lives. With my website, I am excited to reach more families in a way that will manifest healthy living.
