Blog Tour/Guest Post: The Circle

  Circle copy

Behind the Novel: Author's Insight

The Circle is book one of the Sidhe series. Many future events are subtly set in motion in this novel. Readers will resolve some of the mysteries surrounding Emerald Lake in The Circle. However, there are a few seemingly inconsequential events shared in the first book that are very important to the entire series.  Don't worry, there are lots of hints sprinkled throughout the novel. It will be interesting to hear reader speculation about why "such and such" is in the story, or how "this or that" will turn out.  The entire series of books tells ONE story that spans several years, but if I wrote this as one book, it would be ridiculously long! The characters will grow and mature as the story goes along, growing stronger and smarter to handle what lies ahead.

The inspiration for The Circle came to me while I was in a "time out," for what I don't remember :)  I imagined what I might find if I were able to lift one of the tiles in the floor.  I envisioned a wise old man hunched over an ancient writing desk. The man was scribbling madly on yellowed parchment paper.  This man became Uilleam.

A bit of trivia - Fairy Stone Park is an actual state park in Virginia.  It is known for the fairy stones found near the edge of the lake.

Excerpt:

“You’ve seen a Shade Wolf? While the sun was overhead?” Chief Draghone asked. The boy nodded. “Then you were too close to their dens. I thought we talked about this Adolphus? You could endanger the entire village with your foolish desires.”
“But you said the Shade Wolves are our friends. That they protect Thornmount and the forest just as we do,” the boy said.
“True, but neither man nor beast likes it when an intruder comes to his home uninvited. And with a new litter coming, you’re lucky they didn’t tear you apart and feed you to the cubs for their first meal.”
Surprisingly the boy did not back down. Mildly irritated, the chief still admired his son’s conviction and passion. “I did no harm, father, I swear it. He even spoke to me. He warned me to go away,” Adolphus said with the excitement only a boy could display.
“And what did this Shade Wolf say?”
            “He said run with purpose.”
“And did you?” the father asked.
“Of course. I’ve never run so fast. When I made it back to the village, the wolf was gone,” Adolphus said excitedly.
Thayne Draghone bellowed with laughter, and put his massive arm around his son. They all fear what they do not understand, he thought. That is why you are chief.
“You still have much to learn, young one. Listen closely, son, for this is truth,” he said as he knelt next to his boy so they could see eye to eye. “Run with purpose is not a warning, it is an ancient wolf saying.”
The boy was perplexed; this was not at all what he thought happened during his brief encounter with the wolf. “I don’t understand. What does that mean?”
“Run with purpose. It means do not waste energy, life, seasons. When you hunt, hunt until your prey is in your jaws. If you fight, fight with all your strength until you win your enemy’s throat. If you love, love until your heart stops beating.  And if you must run, go swiftly until you run with your pack once more. This is the way of the wolf. This is the way of the warrior. And I pray to the gods it will be your way too,” the chief explained.
Adolphus looked back in the direction of the wolves with a new understanding and appreciation. His fear vanished, replaced with admiration and a sense of wonder. I want to see a Shade Wolf again. I’ll be brave, he thought.
“Come boy, the night grows darker still. Your mother will whip your hide… and mine if we don’t return to the cooking fires soon,” said Thayne.
“Can’t we stay a while longer? I want to listen. I wonder what they’re saying now, Father,” said the boy.
“When the sun rises I’ll travel to their den and pay my respects. I will offer gifts of meat and dugan entrails in celebration of new life. I was hoping my son could accompany me, but I fear if he doesn’t find his bed soon, he’ll be too weary,” said the chief.
He barely finished his sentence before the boy scrambled down the watchtower and scurried toward home. The father chuckled as he watched his son dash away. Run with purpose, young one. Now you’re getting it, he thought.

Editorial Reviews Salisbury is a rising star in genre fiction. This book makes a unique and exciting contribution in the fantasy realm. The first of great things to come. --Jake Black, "The Authorized Ender Companion" "Smallville" "Ender's Game: Recruiting Valentine" Amazon Reviews Conclusion: A fantasy adventure that features lots of action and intrigue that is geared to a YA audience. There are moments in this tale that are especially well done... story telling at a level that I'd be interested to see what this author would do with an adult orientated fantasy work. As a dedicated YA work... 5 Stars. ~ Ray Nicholson The beginning of a great adventure! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book of the Trail of Bones series. It is an unpredictable adventure, with heartwrenching acts of love and friendship. The story ended before I was prepared to put my Kindle down, and now I will wait anxiously for the second book to be published. In the meantime, I think I'll read it again with my eleven-year-old son; I'm sure he'll love it as much as I do. Give it a read! ~ HRL Enthralling story line that really pulls you in …The characters were some that I will not easily forget because he explains their background in a way that makes the reader really connect and believe they are real. He creates a world that I long to see. I really grew to both love and hate different characters. I think that is a sign of a really great author when they can make us feel so much emotion towards a character. ~ Janason

Why I Choose to Write Historical Novels
By
Ann Tatlock
Author of Sweet Mercy
I started keeping a journal for my daughter before my husband and I left for China to pick her up. I wanted to keep a record of our trip for her, but more than that, I wanted her to understand that her birth parents had given her up not because they didn’t love her but because they couldn’t keep her. China has a one-child policy, handed down by a government trying to control the country’s vast population.

It’s because of that law that many babies there end up in orphanages. But it is also because of that law that I have a beautiful, wonderful, sweet, intelligent daughter.
When I was a student in high school, history class seemed tedious, boring and irrelevant. History was just that…history. No use dredging it up and making us memorize a bunch of dates.
Now I know better.
Every one of our lives is affected and shaped by not only the events of the present but also those of the past. To paraphrase C. Wright Mills, our lives are lived out at the intersection of history and biography. None of us lives in isolation, untouched by the long seamless tapestry of world events.
That’s why I enjoy setting my stories against the backdrop of major world happenings: the two World Wars, the Great Depression, the 1960s Civil Right Era, the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, the 1948 polio epidemic. And in my newest story, Sweet Mercy, Prohibition and the Golden Age of Gangsters.
I love to examine how these large events affect one small group of people, or one family, or even one person. Where a history class may be cold and objective and sweeping, individual stories tell us what really happened. Through stories we see how people’s lives are broadsided, turned upside down, knocked onto a different course, made worse and, yes, sometimes made better by these overarching events that become World History. For my stories, I’m particularly interested in the good that comes out of the bad.
My grandfather lost his first wife during the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, but then he married my grandmother and my mother was born. My father was set to go to Japan with his unit, but then World War II ended and he came home safe and sound and met my mother. China instituted the one-child policy in 1979 and then….well, whoever would have thought that such a law would give an American woman her much-loved daughter in 1998?
The ripples of history are far-reaching, and while they are often full of heartache, they sometimes carry blessings too.

Blog Tour/Guest post: The Storm Bottle

What kind of research did you have to do to write your novel? Why did you choose the Bermuda Triangle?

The idea for The Storm Bottle came from one single incident that happened to me. I was walking along a beach in Lyme Regis, Dorset (on the south coast of England) when I saw a dolphin in the water, playing with a group of swimmers. Instantly I knew that I might never have this chance again, so despite not having any towel or swimming things, I took off my shirt and shoes and socks and ran into the sea. It was pretty amazing – you hardly ever see dolphins so close to shore in England, and this one was as playful as a Labrador.

Later I wondered: why did I do that? I’m not given to impulsive behaviour. What is it about dolphins that makes us so eager to go and swim with them? Why is it that some people even claim it’s ‘the number one thing to do before you die?’ That’s why I wrote The Storm Bottle – to try and find out why.

That was the initial seed of the story – but now came the hard part, the research. I read up exhaustively on the behaviour of dolphins, so as to get this as accurate as I could, and also to get ideas for the central story.
Writing the dolphin parts was particularly challenging, because I had to throw out everything we normally take for granted. For instance, dolphins can have a chat from half a mile away, they can see in two ways (eyesight and sonar), they only sleep with half their brain at a time, and of course they have no hands or material possessions. So what do they even talk about? They’re also much more ‘human’ than we like to think, meaning they have a darker, more violent side. They’re also pretty sexist, the males travelling around in big gangs, herding and corralling the females. I didn’t want to paint them in an idealised way as so much fiction does, so I researched as much as I could.

The funny – or should I say frustrating – thing about researching dolphins so carefully is that a lot of people don’t believe me. Several publishers who rejected the book cited their main reason as my ‘anthropomorphic’ treatment of the dolphins. They thought that the dolphins behaved too much like human beings. But almost everything that my dolphins do in the book, wild bottlenose dolphins really do out there in the ocean. They have names, they call each other by name, they form bands and alliances and seemingly name those too – all with a distinctive ‘name whistle’ that each member uses – the males have social ranks, based on how many females they herd, while the females, sadly, tend to be more solitary and passive. The dolphins of Bermuda have also been observed doing another, very mysterious thing: going on long epic journeys out into the mid-Atlantic – no-one knows why yet. In The Storm Bottle, I do suggest a possible reason.

I also did quite a bit of research into Bermuda, and some of the local dialect. There are some fantastic ways that Bermudians have of expressing themselves. I have a jokey Bermudian ‘phrasebook’ which was a mine of information and local humour, and luckily my Bermudian step-mother was able to check my usage.

Other things I had to research included whales (blue, humpback and killer), boats, antique bottles and brain damage. For a long time, most of the human characters in The Storm Bottle think that Michael has suffered brain damage from his near drowning. But his odd behaviour is actually down the fact that a dolphin’s mind is now living in his body.

I chose to write about Bermuda because I know the place quite well, and bring in the infamous Triangle was an obvious thing to do. The Triangle really only features in passing – it’s not central to the plot – but the story does offer a rather interesting explanation as to what (or even who) might be behind it. My personal views of the so-called Triangle phenomenon are more prosaic: the whole thing is essentially a myth, as that area of sea doesn’t in fact causes more disappearances than any other comparable stretch of ocean. But I do agree it’s a marvelous story – and as you might have guessed, I love stories.

I hope you enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed researching and writing it.

Blog Tour: Newstead Project

newstead tour
Tour Schedule

We snagged Melanie for a quick interview to answer some of our burning questions about Newstead Project.

What are some writing challenges that science fiction/fantasy/dystopian writers face? I think each of us faces different challenges based on our life circumstances. For me, I homeschool three kids so finding quiet time to get away and write has been the biggest challenge.

We're just curious, but what's the story behind your novel? This story started with a question a patient of mine asked me about ten years ago. He had a Bible in his hand and out of the blue asked about Nephilim. I had no answer for him, and those of you who know me best know how I hate that. I still to this day have no idea why he asked me. But it did spark a beginning, a wondering. Why would a species like that be created? What would their purpose be? And of course, the most haunting part- that the verse said they would be coming back. Years went by and I didn’t think about that question, and then on September 3, 2010 I was in the woods nature journaling and that question came to mind. In those moments Newstead and Joel had their birth out in those woods.

Every writer talks about challenges they have when writing. What challenges, if any, did you have creating the setting/world building for your novel? I am a rather sparse writer, and The Newstead Project is written in present day America, so I really didn’t have any challenges. I just wrote what I knew.

Inquiring minds want to know, why did you choose the genre that you did for this novel? I didn’t. It is just what I write.

You've been a great sport so far, so I have just one more question. Tell me, and other aspiring writers, about a skill you used to help write your novel.

I spent a lot of time people watching and a lot of time researching. I went to the town this story is located at to ensure my writing was realistic. I researched the Holocaust and went to the Holocaust Museum in Washington. After seeing those faces and pictures and shoes, I knew I had my antagonist. I let Joel and Rachel and Newstead seep into my skin so that when I closed my eyes I saw them, their lives, what happened to them. When I wrote, I just jotted down the story that was taking place in my mind. That makes The Newstead Project very real, to me, and hopefully to anyone who reads it.

If you consider being almost seven feet tall and good at about every sport you’ve ever played normal. Normal ends the day Newstead shows up with an invitation to come to their school.
the school.
Newstead is a private high school in Central Vermont by the Green Mountains. It’s a great place to hide a few hundred people who shouldn’t exist while you train them to become tomorrow’s rulers, tomorrow’s dictators, tomorrow’s gods.
the unexpected.
Rachel Newell thinks she’s just passing through. She never stays any place more than four months and with Newstead so close to Weston, she has even more reason to make this her shortest stop ever. The last thing she expects is to have a reason to stay.
Together Rachel and Joel uncover the truth behind what is

Author Melanie Schulz

I live in Upstate New York with my husband and three children, where I’ve pretty much been planted my entire life.  Which is fine, because it’s beautiful here. My only complaint is that most people assume that New York means NYC, which it doesn’t. There. I’ve done my part in exposing the truth. Truth. The truth is I’m not a writer; storyteller maybe, but not a writer. It wasn’t something I spent years dreaming of, or even what I went to school for. I’m a nurse. I love being a nurse. So why write? I don’t know. I do know when it started, though. September 3, 2010. I know this because I nature journal, and on that day Joel made it into my notes. I guess that’s fitting. Someone like him needed to be birthed out in the woods. If you were to meet me, and I hope someday you do, you would not connect me with this story. I’m a wife, a mother, a nurse. The person who wrote this should’ve been a guy, first off, secondly he should be some militaristic strategist; that’s who you’d expect to see if you were to come to a book signing, not me. But I’m there, in every line. So if I don’t have the good fortune to meet you in person, I hope to see you in THE NEWSTEAD PROJECT.

Blog Tour/Guest Post: Evolution

A Genesis of Style by Sam Kadence

Did you see anyone else on the street?” I had to ask. “Like someone in a white shirt?”
Just you. And I’m pretty sure yours is pink.”
It’s orange.” I flipped out my cell phone and made to dial the cops. “Just relax, mister. I’ll call for help.”
He tilted my face up toward his. I could smell the smoke on his breath, and the blood from his brow. “You don’t smell like alcohol. And your pupils are normal, so no drugs. You could do with a little less glitter and eyeliner.”
If there’s anything Genesis Sage, main character of Evolution, likes more than music, it’s color. From pink hair to bright purple shoes with rainbows drawn on them, he doesn’t let anyone get in the way of his personal sense of style, which is a play of the Harajuku style Visual Kei.
Harajuku is a train station in Japan decorated with many clothing shops and the like. Every Sunday a group of style independent teens gather to parade through the streets. Each teen creates their own look based on a type of dress, some even mix and match. What teens seem to like best about dressing Harajuku style, is that no brand names are required, you can do it with a few accessories, or buy a whole outfit. Here are a few of the popular styles:

Lolita Fashion - includes Gothic, classic, sweet, and sub-styles. You’ll notice this one by the lacy dresses that make young women look like little girls. Often you’ll find corsets and petticoats, bows and laces.

Decora - includes style like dark decora. This particular style means adding decoration. The more colorful the better, rings, hair bows, tutus, knee socks, and bright shoes. The more eye-bleeding bright the outfits are, the more popular they seem to be.

Visual-kei --rock star style, Gene's style. You’ll find a lot of popular Japanese musicians use this style. Bands like Dir en Grey, or Gackt wear this mix of leather and color. Wikipedia says it best with: characterized by the use of make-up, elaborate hair styles and flamboyant costumes, often, but not always, coupled with androgynous aesthetics. This of the old 80s glam rock, but swirl in a lot of color and you have this style.

Gyaru- California girl style. This particular look has a lot of parts to it, including skin dying to make a wearing look deeply tan. Heavy white eye and lip make-up and blond hair. The idea behind this style is to look like a California beach girl and is currently one of the most popular looks in Japan.

There are more, of course, these are just a few of the most popular. Gene dresses the way he does because he doesn’t have a lot of money, feels like he’s going to stand out anyway so why not, loves color, and is a big fan of Japanese music. If you want to have a little fun count how many times he talks about dying his hair in Evolution, and take a peek at this recent video from Japan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O55JB8-xLr8

~ Janason
