Book Blast: The Newstead Project

The Newstead Project

Joel Cranston shouldn’t exist. He just doesn’t know that yet. He’s lived a pretty normal life for the last sixteen years. If you consider being almost seven feet tall and good at about every sport you’ve ever played normal. Normal ends the day Newstead shows up with an invitation to come to their school.
the school.
Newstead is a private high school in Central Vermont by the Green Mountains. It’s a great place to hide a few hundred people who shouldn’t exist while you train them to become tomorrow’s rulers, tomorrow’s dictators, tomorrow’s gods.
the unexpected.
Rachel Newell thinks she’s just passing through. She never stays any place more than four months and with Newstead so close to Weston, she has even more reason to make this her shortest stop ever. The last thing she expects is to have a reason to stay.
Together Rachel and Joel uncover the truth behind what is
the newstead project.

Book Trailer

Author Melanie Schulz

I live in Upstate New York with my husband and three children, where I’ve pretty much been planted my entire life.  Which is fine, because it’s beautiful here. My only complaint is that most people assume that New York means NYC, which it doesn’t. There. I’ve done my part in exposing the truth. Truth. The truth is I’m not a writer; storyteller maybe, but not a writer. It wasn’t something I spent years dreaming of, or even what I went to school for. I’m a nurse. I love being a nurse. So why write? I don’t know. I do know when it started, though. September 3, 2010. I know this because I nature journal, and on that day Joel made it into my notes. I guess that’s fitting. Someone like him needed to be birthed out in the woods. If you were to meet me, and I hope someday you do, you would not connect me with this story. I’m a wife, a mother, a nurse. The person who wrote this should’ve been a guy, first off, secondly he should be some militaristic strategist; that’s who you’d expect to see if you were to come to a book signing, not me. But I’m there, in every line. So if I don’t have the good fortune to meet you in person, I hope to see you in THE NEWSTEAD PROJECT.

Blog Tour: Replacing Gentry Interview

Welcome to the author hot seat. On deck, Julie N. Ford. Let the grilling *coughs* interviewing begin.

Please tell us about yourself?
I’m a forty-eight-year-old mother of two daughters. And no, I’m not ashamed to tell people my age. I like getting older. I feel like I become a better person with every passing year. I’d tell you my weight too if I knew it. But I don’t like scales. We give them way too much power. I have BA in Political Science from San Diego State University and a Masters of Social Work from the University of Alabama. I’ve worked in teaching, childbirth education and family therapy. Now I mostly write, but hope to return to social work one day.

Tell us your latest news?
Besides the release of Replacing Gentry, I’m working on another novel, a women’s fiction I like to describe as The Graduate meets Steel Magnolias.

When and why did you begin writing?
I started writing, literally, about six years ago. Prior to sitting down and starting my first novel, I’d never written creatively, never taken a class. It was crazy. I’d always played with scenarios for stories and movies in my head but had never considered writing any of them down. In my second year of graduate school for a Masters in Social Work, I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. After enduring chemotherapy, I escaped with my life and an unrelenting desire to tell Josie’s (my first novel) story. The only thing I can surmise is that somehow the chemo had an effect on my creativity, kind of how a superhero will receive his/her powers after falling into a vat of toxic waste :)

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I guess when I signed my first publishing contract. But I still have a hard time defining myself as a writer/novelist. Maybe if my writing career ever takes off, I feel more comfortable with title of author. How can we find you? Website, Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc. - please share your public links.

Tell me a little about your book.
One of my favorite books is Rebecca so I decided to blend my story with DuMaurier’s, make it modern and Southern, and voila, Replacing Gentry was born. Marlie, the main character, is curious and tenacious to a fault. Gets her into all kinds of trouble. When she starts digging into matters she shouldn’t, she unwittingly unearths a dangerous conspiracy she fears her husband might kill to keep secret. And then there’s the handsome Johnny Hutchinson who seems to show up at all the wrong times, conveniently with a snarky comment hanging on his perfect lips. What’s his deal anyway? And where has Marlie seen him before?

What gave you the idea for this particular story?
The inspiration for Replacing Gentry was ignited by a question my daughter asked regarding spirits. The paranormal elements I’d originally intended for this text were eventually edited out but still, the plot originated with her inquiry.

Are you a full-time writer or part-time, and how do you organize your writing time?
For the most part, I’m a part-time writer. Generally, I write from about 8-12, give or take, every day but Sunday. I take Sundays off. Then, as often as I can, I’ll sneak into my office to do a little work. Also, I’m constantly scribbling notes and musing about my plot.

What is the toughest part about being a writer and how do you get past it?
The hardest part about writing is that I don’t enjoy the business end of it. I don’t like stressing over sales and bad reviews or the way publishers/agents want to niche me—that in order to make money, and a name for myself, I have to stick to one genre. I simply love to write and I want to create as many different types of stories as my brain can come up with. I just do what I love. When it comes right down to it, my novels won’t be any good if I’m not passionate about what I’m writing.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Whether we want to call it fate or God’s will, life has way of directing us down the proper path. If we’re able to learn from, and trust in the power’s that be, and allow a source greater than ourselves to lead us, sooner or later, we’ll end up right where we belong.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Yes. I just read a book by Amy McNamara called Lovely, Dark and Deep. It’s a YA novel about a twenty-something girl suffering from depression after she watched her boyfriend die in a car accident. McNamara writes in first-person, present tense, which puts some readers off, but here I thought made the text very personal, thought provoking. Her writing style reads like prose. I felt like reading this novel made me a better writer.

What are your current projects?
My current WIP is a women’s fiction best described as The Graduate meets Steel Magnolias. Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work? Kristin Hannah. She is my favorite women’s fiction author. I love her stories, characters and writing style. Second would be Sophie Kinsella. Mostly Kinsella’s earlier writing. I think her novels, Can You Keep a Secret, and, The Undomestic Goddess, are so funny. I like to mix these two styles when I write. Heartfelt stories about women with pops of humor.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
I over-wrote this first manuscript by about 60,000 words. I’m not entirely sure how that happened (I have a sneaky suspicion that I may have been distracted by the release of three other novels in that same time period) but when I got to the end, I had A LOT of cutting to do. Then when I found an interested publisher, they wanted me to cut some more, and focus in on only one plot line. Long story short, I wrote this novel about three times. UHG! But in the end, all the work was worth it. I’m very happy with the result.

Who is your publisher and how did you connect with them?
For this book I’m using a publisher called WiDo. I’ve had two different publishers for my other three books. For all of my novels, I’ve found my publisher through cold query letters. Querying is tedious but with patience works quite well.

Alright, let's get a little silly. Are you ready? Okay, here we go.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I’d just like to be better at coma placement. Seriously, the ability to punctuate correctly could be considered a superpower for someone like me. And I’m jealous of those people who can spell even the most obscure word off the top of their head. As an amateur gardener, I’d like the power to make plants grow. Like that redhead in the movie, Sky High, I want to be able to conjure up plants whenever and wherever I want them—make the world beautiful and green.

If you can be a Disney character, who would you be and why?
Merida from Brave. I love her flowing red hair. I’ve always wanted to learn to shoot a bow and ride a horse at full gallop.

Have you ever jumped out of a plane?
Yes. I jumped from an airplane at 13,000 feet. Not tandem. Free-fall. And I’d do it again. I’m also open to Base Jumping. I have a terrible fear of heights and at the same time, feel the need to hurl myself into oblivion—as long as I have parachute attached to my back.

Book Blast: Hades and the Helm of Darkness

Hades and the Helm of Darkness (Heroes in Training Book 3) The Heroes in Training are entering the Underworld—if Hades can conquer his canine fears, that is. The Underworld usually isn’t really meant to be a fun place—but tell that to Hades! He loves the dark and the stinky smell of sulfur. However, there is one thing that Hades is not a fan of: dogs. And when Zeus and his fellow Olympians encounter Cerberus—a snarling, three-headed dog—Hades must conquer his fears and tame the hound so everyone can continue into the Underworld and deposit their Titan prisoner, Oceanus, back where he belongs! But with magical water that causes forgetfulness, hot beds of lava, and another epic battle with two more Titans standing in their way, will Zeus and his heroes make it out of the Underworld with everyone intact?
Heroes in Training by Joan Holub & Suzanne Williams Authors Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams deliver fun, adventures, and a few surprises as ten-year-old Olympians go on a journey of a lifetime to discover their true identities and defeat their Titan enemies. Praise for Heroes in Training "Readers will gobble this down and look for more, make no mythtake." ~ Kirkus “This is a fun read, casting Zeus in the role of relatable kid, and there is a nice balance between his primary goal of survival and his sense of destiny and adventure. . . Share this title, and likely more to come, with those still too young for Percy Jackson’s adventures.” ~ School Library Journal The Series #1 Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom #2 Poseidon and the Sea of Fury #3 Hades and the Helm of Darkness #4 Hyperion and the Great Balls of Fire Aladdin Paperbacks (ages 6-9) http://series.simonandschuster.com/Heroes-in-training
Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom (Book 1) After pulling a magical thunderbolt from a stone, ten-year-old Zeus goes on the adventure of a lifetime in this thrilling start to a brand-new series! The terrible Titans--merciless giants who enjoy snacking on humans--have dominated the earth and put the world into chaos. But their rule is about to be put to the test as a group of young Olympians discover their powers and prepare to righteously rule the universe.... Ten-year-old Zeus is mystified (and super-annoyed) by the fact that he keeps getting hit by lightening. Every. Single. Year. He also longs for adventure, as he has never been far from the cave where he grew up. Zeus gets his wish--and a lot more than he bargained for--when he is kidnapped by dangerous, giant Titans! In self-defense, he grabs the first thing he sees--an actual thunderbolt he pulls from a stone that is covered in mysterious markings. Zeus is the only one who can decipher the markings, and sets off on a quest to rescue his youthful fellow Olympians from the evil Cronus. Armed with his trusty thunderbolt (named Bolt, of course), Zeus is on an adventure of a lifetime--and a journey to fulfill his destiny as King of the Gods.

Poseidon and the Sea of Fury (Book 2) A young Poseidon must triumph over aquatic terrors in this Heroes in Training adventure. The merciless Cronus and his Titan buddies are in hot pursuit of Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon, who plan to travel across the treacherous boiling sea in order to save a fellow Olympian. They have a boat, but they also have a problem: Poseidon can’t swim and is terrified of the water (well, really of the creatures that lurk in its depths). The group faces danger after danger as they battle singing sirens, a fishy and ferocious Titan named Oceanus, and people-eating monsters sent by Cronus himself. Can Poseidon overcome his fears and help his fellow heroes escape Cronus and his cronies?

Author Suzanne Williams Suzanne Williams is the award-winning author of nearly 40 books for children, from picture books and easy readers to chapter books and middle grade fiction series. A former elementary school librarian, she lives near Seattle. Her picture book Library Lil (illustrated by Steven Kellogg) won the New Mexico children's choice award in 2000 and was on several other state award lists. She is co-author (with Joan Holub) of the popular Goddess Girls series(for ages 8 - 12) and Heroes in Training (ages 6 - 11). Other series include Fairy Blossoms and Princess Power.

Author Joan Holub I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children's books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job. I illustrated my first published children's book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts -- Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee! Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children's books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

Blog Tour: The Silver Sphere

Tour Schedule

Tell us your latest news? I just had a great book launch party at Rock & Reilly’s on the Sunset Strip here in Los Angeles. It was a really good turn out and we had a blast.

When and why did you begin writing? I grew up in an urban area and read a lot when I was really young. Then I started writing short stories and it found it to be fun; creating my own worlds. The first short was called Wolver-Mutants, about wolverines exposed to radiation and become super beasts. The second was The Silver Sphere.

When did you first consider yourself a writer? Well, when I was signed to Evolved Publishing, it just made it all seem more official to me.

How can we find you? Website, Facebook, Twitter, blog, etc. - please share your public links.

  • Website: www.thesilversphere.org
  • Twitter: @michaeldadich

And now on to some random fun questions.

Are you a full-time writer or part-time, and how do you organize your writing time? I am a senior executive, and a volunteer youth coach for my son’s teams (he loves sports). So it’s always a challenge, and can be difficult to write after a day of work and coaching. I sacrifice vacation time to create long blocks of writing. In the summer its easier for me to find time as I take a break from coaching and can  some time off to write.

When did you first know you wanted to be a writer? My college professor told me he though I had what it takes, and since then I always thought about it.

Which genres do you write, which do you prefer, and why? I love fantasy, seeing and creating a different world through the eyes of my characters. I like spooky too, so may tackle a ghost story or something eventually.

What is the toughest part about being a writer and how do you get past it? When I get in a zone, my son always wants me to play catch and things, or just family stuff around the house. I find it hard to say no to him lol. I try to let him know Daddy is working but can do 10 minutes.

Is there anything in your story based upon a real life event?  If so, tell me about it.  Yes. There is a character, Nick Casey, I based a scene on through an experience I had. I suffered a brain aneurysm playing hockey some years back, and had a dream sequence post surgery that I used during his introduction. I blogged about it, you can read it at my website.

In Zach’s introduction, I pulled a fire alarm once to scare off some bullies who were picking on a friend when I was a kid.

What kind of research did you do for this type of story? I read a lot of medieval literature, focusing on armory. I studied an astrology textbook to learn the southern hemisphere more.

What inspired you to write your first book?
I just enjoy reading and writing, from an early age, and one day a friend that I respect read a rough draft and really encouraged me. In college, my professor felt I had the talent to become an author and his words always gnawed at me.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?  You are needed. Somewhere, someone or place needs you. Go find it, if it doesn’t come to you, but check your messages ;)

What books have most influenced your life most? I have said this many times, but C.S Lewis had a huge impact on me when I was very young, 7 or so. Not just Narnia but all his books. I read King’s The Stand and Salem’s Lot at an early age (my folks didn’t know). Peter Straubs Shadowland I read when I was 11 and loved it. I think the books you read at a young age have the biggest impact on you if you become a writer.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? C.S Lewis, because he instilled the love of reading in me at such a young age. I have read almost all of Stephen King’s books so obviously he rubbed off on me.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest? China  Miéville I started reading over the last few years, he is different, hip and edgy. I have discovered a few authors on my publisher, like Angela Scott, Lane Diamond and Emlyn Chand who are really impressive.

What are your current projects? I am writing the sequel, The Sinister Kin, right now, and finished a short story, that is actually a prequel, that will be released in an anthology from my publisher.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book? Yep. I did in the screenplay, so you will have to wait for that answer ;)

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? It all comes from reading first, then playing as a child and creating worlds through imagination, and wanting to put them on paper.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? I don’t like to be hampered by one POV, though it’s a delicate line as you need the reader to be engaged by your characters.

Any tips for new writers hoping to write in the genre of your book? Write. Rewrite. Get feedback. Rewrite. Be patient. Listen to your beta readers, if something comes up more than once, address it. Rewrite. Have more than one full edit before you show it to the world.

EXCERPT

In the hidden world of Ourea, there are too many beautiful places to name: rose-covered cliffs tower miles over the valleys and forests below, cities thrive in submerged ecosystems beneath the sea, and the dragons that once ruled volcanoes are now but fossils in a cave. The creatures of human myth flourish in Ourea. Trees are this world’s skyscrapers. Magic is its currency. And while the rest of Earth forgot what it means to dream big, Ourea kept alive its wonder.
At least, that’s how Kara saw it.

Lichgates

Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things--Ourea.

Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother's recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book's untamed power. Discovered by Ourea's royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict--a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn't trust anyone... but she's being hunted and can't survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn't know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.

For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

The Goddess Girls Series

The Goddess Girls series, by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams puts a modern spin on classic Greek myths. Follow the ins and outs of divine social life where the most privileged godboys and goddessgirls in the Greek pantheon hone their mythical skills.
  • Athena the Brain Finding out she’s a goddess and being sent to Mount Olympus brings Athena new friends, a weird dad, and the meanest girl in mythology—Medusa!
  • Persephone the Phony Hiding her feelings works fine for Persephone until she meets a guy she can be herself with—Hades, the bad-boy of the Underworld.
  • Aphrodite the Beauty Sure Aphrodite is beautiful, but it’s not always easy being the goddessgirl of love.
  • Artemis the Brave She may be the goddess of the hunt, but that doesn’t mean Artemis always feels brave.
  • Athena the Wise Zeus says Heracles has to do twelve tasks or he'll get kicked out of MOA! Although she's not sure it's wise, Athena agrees to help out.
  • Aphrodite the Diva Isis claims she's the goddess of love? Ha! But to keep the title all to herself, Aphrodite has to find the perfect match for Pygmalion, the most annoying boy ever.
  • Artemis the Loyal It’s time for the annual Olympic Games, and Artemis and her friends are not happy. It’s boys only. Not fair!
  • Medusa the Mean Medusa wants to be more like her two sisters and the other kids at Mount Olympus Academy -- immortal. Is that too much to ask?
  • The Girl Games (Goddess Girls Super Special) Listen in on what all four goddess girls are thinking as Mount Olympus Academy hosts visitors from many lands--including an adorable kitten! The first-ever standalone superspecial in the Goddess Girls series!
  • Pandora the Curious Pandora is one of the few mortals at Mount Olympus Academy—and probably the most curious of all the students in school.

Author Joan Holub

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years.

The Breeders by Katie French

"The Breeders is a YA dystopian read that's as gritty and dark as the cover and title suggest. Henley, author of The Scourge
