Blog Tour - Particle Horizon: Interview & Giveaway

Hello everyone, and welcome to our interview corner. We have with us today, author Selso Xisto, who is on tour with his novel, Particle Horizon. You don't have to take my word for it. Grab a seat and let the interrogation...Interview, begin.

Who are you?
I’m Selso Xisto and I write science fiction! I also ride a fast motorbike and obsess over my cat.

What inspired you to write Particle Horizon?
A long time ago, I read this amazing book called ‘The Eerie Silence: Are we alone in the Universe?’ by Paul Davies. It blew my mind. It got me thinking that there are so many unanswered questions about the origin of the universe, the big bang, etc. That there was a lot of scope to write speculative fiction trying to answer those questions without sounding completely implausible. Before then, I’d always written for myself, silly short stories for fun, but I never believed I had the chops to write real Sci-Fi. Then I realized most writers do a lot of research, but that the really big, fundamental questions are often just things they made up or speculate on like the rest of us! So, I did a lot of research and just got writing. Reading the Night’s Dawn trilogy by Peter F Hamilton was the final straw; his world building and characters were so awesome and compelling that I couldn’t keep the beast inside me for much longer! I wanted to create a story that had the same effect on someone else!

Tell us a bit about the world, Angelhaven.
Angelhaven is a hollowed out asteroid 15 miles long and 4 miles wide. Its world is on the inside surface and held in place by centrifugal rotation. This is not a new idea by any means, and was heavily inspired by Greg Bear’s ‘Eon’ and Arthur C Clarke’s ‘Rendezvous with Rama’. Angelhaven orbits a vast Jupiter-like gas giant called Hades. From the asteroid world trails a 3,000 mile-long tether that drags a scoop through the clouds of Hades collecting natural resources that are siphoned up to the factories in Angelhaven. Along the zero G axis of this world, teenagers fly like birds in a sleeve of cloud around their artificial sun…

What about your main characters?
Particle Horizon is told from many perspectives along the way. The three main characters all come from very different backgrounds and sides of the galactic conflict. Xavier is a battle-hardened Union marine sent to confront the Legion invasion head-on. He has a strange power - the ability to see people’s emotions whenever he closes his eyes. The Union of Free Worlds is a progressive, technophile society; religion was banned long ago. Xavier fights an enormous conflict between the evidence of his ‘magical’ abilities and his training. He also carries a massive chip on his shoulder; his mother was a victim of the LightBringer many years ago.

Una is the daughter of the great scientist in Angelhaven who makes the scientific breakthrough that provoked this war. She has an artificial mind and was created with the sole purpose of helping his research. She fights every day to assert her humanity and cope with what she is and what she’s done.
Aja is survivor and victim. She’s a reluctant conscript in the Legion; forced to fight for a cult she doesn’t believe in. She clings to an old, outlawed Christian faith and wants nothing more than to escape this war.

Everyone loves to know about the villain, so tell us about the antagonist.
The main antagonist is known only as Cain. He too has a mysterious special ability, though he knows exactly where it came from. He is pure, calculating, cold, rage and subterfuge. He is motivated only by revenge and a need for answers only one person can give.

What themes are discussed in the book?
There are a few key themes in the book: faith, humanity and origin. Growing up a Christian and slowly beginning to question my beliefs, as I got older, religion was bound to be a key part of my first book. Don’t get me wrong here; this is not an anti-religious book, I think you’ll see when you read it that there is room for faith and science, and that ultimately a lot of science is based on a faith in certain theories that are later proved wrong anyway. My religious themes are centered on how faith can be corrupted and twisted; Aja herself is a Christian but persecuted by the cult that has taken over her world.

The other major theme is that of humanity. I’m endlessly fascinated by the idea of sentience and where the line is between intelligence and self-awareness. I tried to explore this from the point of view of a super-smart artificial intelligence who happens to be cursed with a human body and all the biological and hormonal issues that affect our behavior. Una doesn’t know if she’s human or not and this gets even more complicated when she’s asked to do something unspeakable to protect her fellow Havenites. I won’t spoil it here though!
The big one is origin; where did the universe come from? What lies beyond the particle horizon? I’m not going to give this one away, but I had fun weaving my own little speculation on this question.

Can you share one random fact about yourself for our readers.
I once made a comedy song with a friend at Disney called ‘Monkey Lap dance’ that got played on prime-time breakfast radio in London!

You are a fascinating author, Selso, and we hope to have you again. For our visitors, don't leave yet, there's more. Selso is giving away an autographed copy of his novel. Enter the giveaway below for chance at the exciting world of Angelhaven

Blog Tour - Particle Horizon: Guest Post

Welcome to Angelhaven.

As your ship emerges from the particle displacement portal, the first thing you will undoubtedly notice is the overwhelming presence of our host planet and great benefactor: Hades. This gas giant monster is almost twice the size of Jupiter and provides us with all the raw materials for our survival and industry. Within its upper cloud decks, a great AI-controlled cloud scoop ship ploughs a furrow day and night.  It farms water, oxygen, carbon, ammonia, silicon and hydrocarbons amongst many other elements which are sent up to Angelhaven through a 3,000 mile-long umbilical. Do not be alarmed by the aurora-like firework display you see through that observation-deck window; the waves of light you are witnessing are created by Hades' vicious radiation battering against the ships' protective magnetic shield. You are quite safe.

As you round the horizon-spanning curve of Hades, the ice-moon of Clara will come into view. A lifeless, insignificant moon with few resources of any use. Uncharitable gossip amongst Havenites suggest these qualities inspired the discover of this star system to name the moon after his late wife. Yohannes Phillips' wife was indeed called Clara, but the board of AngelCorp can assure you that all founding members were fine, upstanding members of the Union of Free Worlds and her contribution to early colonisation efforts will be long remembered.

Within a few moments, Angelhaven itself will come into view. From the outside, it looks like a fairly unassuming asteroid. 15 miles-long and a shade over 4 wide, you will notice the various exterior domes and projections that give a glimpse of the class-leading industry within. From the north end cap you will see the umbilical connection to the cloud scoop thousands of miles below. At the southern end which you are now approaching, you will see the docks that lead to Angelhaven's interior.

After passing biometric and DNA security profiling, you will attend a day-long AngelCorp security briefing. As you are by now undoubtedly aware, we go to great lengths to keep Angelhaven's industry and location a secret. The captain of the ship that brought you here did not even know the displacement coordinates; these are kept on highly-encrypted keys managed by the ship AI. As you begin your new life on Angelhaven and start your illustrious new career working for AngelCorp manufacturing, you will begin to learn the importance of these measures and why your particular skills in nano-engineering and magnetic forge programming caught our recruiter's attention.

As you board your complimentary AngelCorp taxi, prepare for a somewhat disorienting spectacle! People from conventional terrestrial worlds often experience an unusual form of acute claustrophobia. The 'horizon' of Angelhaven curves upwards until both 'ends' meet, 4 miles above your head. If you feel any kind of nausea, please ask the onboard AI and you will be given an appropriate retch-suppressant to inhale.

You will be flying along the central axis of Angelhaven where a bottled sun runs the full 15-mile length of the world. Around it is a sleeve of cloud which casts shadows and rain (strictly on tightly-managed agricultural schedules) on cities and farmland 2 miles below. Angelhaven rotates to create centrifugal force sufficient to approximate one Earth gravity. You will notice that the 'gravity' is strongest on the ground and decreases to nothing the closer you get to the axis.

As you cruise within the cloud tunnel, the AI controlling your taxi will rotate your cabin to shield you from the glare of the light tube and give you the best view possible of our beautiful world overhead. Through the gaps in the cloud the first thing you will surely notice is the apparently solid band of green taking up almost a 5th of our available landmass. This seemingly solid green ring is made up of a new Union-designed wonder-crop you may have read about; Longwheat is a genetically modified alien plant making life possible on dozens of distant worlds whose hostile native biology doesn't want us there. Each long, fibrous stalk is a factory of proteins, carbohydrates and oils and almost every part of it can be synthesised into various foods or plastics.

Your taxi is now approaching the great city of New Chaldea. Perched on the northern shore of Lake Clara, it is dominated by the central, winding spiral which houses Angelhaven's most prestigious hotel for visiting VIPs and the main offices of AngelCorp. As part of your induction you will have the opportunity to sit in the low gravity board room on the 312th floor and take in the breathtaking vista whilst meeting the current board.

As you approach the northern end of Angelhaven, you will see the loading docks and a cluster of unusual-looking modules attached to the light-tube itself. This is the high-security zero G lab complex and is strictly out of bounds to all employees and citizens below alpha-level clearance.

You may also have noticed one of Angelhaven's best-kept secrets as you travel through the cloud tunnel; the teenagers flying past your window like birds are 'gliding the tube' an extreme sport pioneered by the industrious youth of our world. Using custom-designed flight harnesses, they use the peculiar centrifugal rotation and low gravity within the cloud-tunnel to perform regular acrobatic displays. These surfers of the skies are most active during the low-trade seasons when axis-traffic is lowest - wait a moment…

Wait a moment... Please forgive this interruption to your tour but an emergency announcement has been relayed across Angelhaven's network. A pair of Alliance-registered heavy freighters docked this morning have broken security protocols.

Wait a moment… You are being taken immediately to a secure location.

Wait a moment… We are being invaded...

Soul Sisters Blog Tour - Guest Post

Let's welcome author, Janiera Eldridge, to the Indie Author How-to Blog. Janiera, we wish you much success on your tour and with your novel. I'm going to step back and give the floor to you.

The Great and Not-So-Great Things
About Being a New Author
I’ve been so happy lately with my decision to be a self-published author. I have total control over my book and I receive a lot more of the profit than authors who are traditionally published. My urban fantasy novel Soul Sisters is my first novel. Being a new author comes with some great perks and some things that cause a bit of a challenge.
Pros of being a new author:
  • Starting from scratch: Being able to start with a clean review record is awesome. People are just experiencing your work for the first time so there is no negative buzz surrounding you.
  • People love discovering new authors: From my first hand experience readers love discovering new and talented authors. The support for my first book has been overwhelming and I need all the help I can get.
  • Your discovery: I love discovering new blogs to work with and talking to new fans. Some authors say they hate marketing, not me! I love finding and participating in new ways to market my book. A lot of the marketing techniques I’ve learned through marketing Soul Sisters will help me with all of the other books I tend to release. There is nothing like fresh learning!
Cons of being a new author:
  • Not having a built fan base: While discovering a new author is great, most authors will tell you having a built fan base is extremely valuable! A lot of authors start to build their fan base after their book is released. Big Mistake. Start building fan base as soon as you start writing your book. You will find that by the time your book is released, you will have a decent fan base to start with.
  • Readers not having faith in your work: Because this is your first book, readers have not had time to build up an opinion about your writing. Make sure your first book is at its absolute best when you release it because your first book will be so important to your image! It also will determine what readers will return to read your future work.
  • Marketing: A lot of authors view marketing as a negative thing and it can be difficult if the author waits until the last minute to market their book. However, marketing is essential to being an author so; learn to have fun with it. Let your personality show by doing interviews and guests post but above all get started marketing your book early.
Being a new author can be hard but, it also can be extremely fun when you once you learn how to put a little professionalism behind it.
